Uzumebi -the songfic-
Just a little something I was working on. Thought I might write some background stories based on my character Lutea but I discarded that idea. As you might or might not know, I am obsessed with this song. Just for the sake of this little oneshot, I revised the translation I did for it. Check it out yo! A little less confusing I hope.
I started to write this with a million different ideas but it all got tangled up together rather ugly looking so I just them to just four pages. It was originally ten pages long. The problem I have is that the connection it had from the song is somewhat lost at the end of the story. I thought of add some more but I lost the drive to do it again.
If I got positive reviews from this, I might do more song-inspired fic. In the mean time, enjoy.

- Spoiler:
Charred woods are as brittle as charred remains of a human can be. Even bricks and stones cracked under such sheer amount of heat engulfed this kingdom. In her sight, the once grandiose marble palace that was a symbol of the mighty Empire was decreased to a pile of rubble. Everywhere she look there were scattered burnt carcasses of horses, as well as the shriveled shapes that was once human. The stench of burning human flesh was nothing alike beef or chicken, but she cared not to be bothered by it. There was some that seems to be too small for an adult, but she didn’t pay much attention to them too. There’s no longer pity in her heart even for innocent children torched to charcoal. At least, not as she once was. There might be some of those unfortunate souls she knew, but she didn’t bother. Her heart was already black – she’s unable to feel any remorse at all, not to mention guilt. What had happened was a tragedy, she knew, but her rage was a fiery storm that can’t differentiate between the one she wanted to kill, and those she cared for dearly. Among the piles of the dead, she saw a figure that she was looking for. The inferno had burned him right through his face, exposing the fragile skull, making it impossible to identify who he was but she knew. She knew it was him from the half melted golden crown encircling his forehead, and the still glowing sword that had absorbed the heat from the intense fire. She stood in front of the skeleton and only stared down to it. She had half expected her anger to be satisfied by this massacre but somehow it had not. The pain between her breasts was still there, as if she was impaled and bleeding. Her broken heart as if suddenly came back to life at that moment, beating so rapidly as if trying to make her remember all the moments she shared together with him. The precious moments she once treasured were lost were already lost even before she decided to burn the whole kingdom to ash, and nothing – not even the Gods – could do to undo it. Silently, she closed her eyes and shut her sight from the ruins around her.
---
She was in love with him, as he was in love with her. They’ve known each other their whole lives but only recently they shared their vows of love. There’s no need to think it over when he proposed; she knew him in and out already. What a better choice for a husband if not the man you knew through his boyhood and was with him when he matured into a dependable man? He was a passionate person with ambitions as high as the mountains, and she admired him for that. He was an honest man that strived only for justice. He was patriotic and made his lifelong dream was to make the land a better place. When he promised her he would build a better country, with no more dying children and starving poor, she believed him. He promised her a day when she no longer needs to worry about her students stopped coming to class because they had died in their sleep after a whole night battling a fatal fever due to the lack of medical attention and hygiene. But more importantly, he wanted to create a kingdom where they can live their remaining lives in happiness. Those were his dream, as well as it had become hers too, but where did it ever gone wrong?
She knew from the moment he said he wanted to join a rebellion army to overthrow the iron-gripped government of the monarch that it would ended in despair, but she kept it to herself. They might have grown up together but there’s one secret she dared not to tell anyone, especially him. With the ancient magic flowed within her blood, she had foretold the consequences. It will all end with a tragedy, but she could not see what kind of tragedy – foretelling the future was always undependable. There’s no precise way to tell but she knew there will be tears. Will it be his? Or will it be hers instead?
When his obsession with the rebel’s propaganda escalated beyond recognition, he became more and more distant from her. He almost never came home. He never remembered to send regards of his well-being over at the rebel’s camp. When she tried to visit him, she was shooed away like a dirty dog. They say the one she’s asking for would never want to meet someone like herself. They say he would never be married to someone so common like her. At first she refused to believe them for truth, but she saw it one day through the magic embedded inside her. He, the person she loved so much, so casually taking another to his bed. She pretended not to know any of the sort when he did came to visit the home they claimed theirs, and he never said anything to explain the rumors she told him about. When again and again her magic revealed to her what her eyes cannot see, she couldn’t take it anymore. Her heart was at the point of breaking. The first moment she had to sneak away from the village they grew up together, she took it without a second thought. If she stayed any longer her body would shatter from the pain her heart makes.
She put between him a long terrible year, yet there never was a whisper of him looking for her – his wife, the woman he promised to cherish her life for. A part of her wanted to go back to where he was, but the other part of her couldn’t possibly forgive him anymore. From afar, she heard the floating rumors that the rebellion army finally took up arms to destroy the Empire in one sweep. She heard someone had defeated and beheaded the last incompetent leader of the army and appointed himself as the commander. Even without eavesdropping for the successor’s characteristic, she knew it would be him. Her magic had shown her the violent fight that ended with the head of the old leader rolled away from his motionless body.
Since then, war broke out like a plague. Under the orders of the new commander, the rebels are unstoppable. Their propaganda demands loyalty from a civilian or death if they oppose it. The rebels terrorized while they expanded at an alarming rate. Before the next exchange of season, the heads of the Royal families were decorating the front of the palace on a stake for everyone to see. Cheers of joy filled the air as they finally could rest their suffering, though there was some still weep for the dead that cannot live to see such day to come. In appreciation of his effort, the people crowned him as the new Emperor. He promised to end such dark days of the land, but what are his promises to her?
Months afterwards was celebrated with much awaited peace and order. There was food to satisfy every belly, and no one died of starvation anymore. She thought of going back to the quiet little village she once called home and sees to her students again but her heart wouldn’t let her. The ancient blood flowing inside her threatened of something disastrous if she stayed in this world any longer but she still chose not to listen. He was the reason she’s breathing on this mortal land, she couldn’t possibly forget about him easily. She would as well cut her own fingers off than to take the ring he had placed on her as a sign she no longer loves him. Her faith was the only thing that keeps her sane, kept the storm of her sadness inside. Each day she prayed he would welcome her back into his embrace. She swore to look past the damage he had done to her if he ever did. But he never did.
It wasn’t long the new order from the new Emperor taken a life on its own. Extermination of heathens they say. Magic users are either being fed boiling water through their nose or being burned on a stake alive, no matter if they really were real magic users or just a victim of accusations. Men, women and children piled like thrash; all because of a whisper they were cursing their neighbors. It was all just the matter of time when people finally point their fingers at her. It’s impossible they knew who she really was on their own – she purposely let them find out. She wanted to meet him again, no matter what path will it take her.
She braced for whatever that may came when she finally has him in her sight again. As if she was not the one being tied to a wooden pole with dry hay and firewood set around her, with the smell of kerosene as it splashed over - she demanded his vows to her; the same vow he spoke when they first met. The same vow that kept her with this stabbing pain of heartbreak. She managed to catch his attention then, standing right in front of his magnificent horse. At first, he only stared down on her with such coldness in his eyes. Those eyes are no longer from the man she once love, her magic had told her, but she didn’t want to listen to her ancient blood. She just wanted to hear the voice of her love again…
He said he never would promise anything to a heathen whore.
Like a volcano, she erupted. Molten lava spewed from her mouth as she screamed her unspeakable pain. The mortal shell of her body cracked into a million pieces and exploded, revealing the pulsing scales of a monster she really was. She mass expanded to tenfold and a pair of flaming wings scorched the sky. Her jaw she opened wide open as more black flames spouted like a furnace burned the air. She heard traumatized screams from under her feet but she didn’t try to avoid burning them where they stood. Their pain was insignificant to what she felt. All these years waiting for him ends with nothing. All these times trapped in this ugly despicable world are for naught. This time, she let her ancient blood sings. They reminded her of what she really was – a rampaging dragon.
----------------
Who are you?
I am who you were calling for.
What are you?
A dragon.
A dragon? You don’t look like a dragon. Aren’t dragons supposed to have wings and breathe fire?
I can be in that form too, but it’s dangerous if I did. I have to leave if I were to revert to my real form.
Don’t leave. I’m lonely.
Of course I wouldn’t leave. You did summon me. Now, tell me what your wish and I shall grant it. This is the reason I’m here in the mortal land.
I want you to stay, and be my wife.
I can’t do that, little boy.
Why? You said you’d grant my wish. I don’t want to be alone anymore. I just buried my parents, and my brothers and sisters; I don’t have anyone else.
Because, she said while using her magic and changed her human shell into a child about his age, I am only a girl. We cannot marry until we’re a little older, right? Why not we try being friends first?
Oh, okay. You’ll be my friend, and then when we’re older you’ll be my wife. Promise?
Only if you promise me one thing in return.
What is it?
Never to forget this conversation and this promise. If you do, I will have to take it all back.
I will never forget, I swear of it.
------
The dragon opened her eyes again, seeing only the pitiful skeleton of the man she once loved. Had it all be for nothing? She took everything away from him because he broke her heart, and forget about his promise. What is there to that promise that allowed her to burn this kingdom to dust? Nothing. It was all for the sake of her rage. In the end, she was left with the loneliness again. Nothing changed, and nothing ever will.
Silently, she knelt beside the remains of what was the one she loved with her whole heart. She took the glowing sword still burning from the intense fire it was exposed to, and drives it straight to the heart that contained her unspeakable love for a mortal.
Re: Uzumebi -the songfic-
I shivered at the end of the story. It was a splendid work, in my opinion. *thumbs up*
Personally, I think your fic matches the song, especially the chorus part. The dispute mentioned in the song was reflected on the fic as the journey and fight the woman had to put just to find out that she was betrayed by the person she loved. So I'd say, this is awesome.
Congratulations! Look forward to see more.

I'm glad you can see how I connect the song with this oneshot. I had a fear no one would be. I'm too delusional sometimes DX
I'm thinking of making another songfic for another Akiko song, putting aside my original fic for a while. I have Harukanaru Tabiji and Replicare on my mind since their lyrics are already in a story form but if there's any other suggestion, I'm open for some.

Ah, I see~ I'd love to see your works on those two songs.
Personally, I found Aoiro Kandzume touching at first. It's about friendship, right? Maybe you can use it later? Or even Sorriso, for its beautiful romance meaning. XD

Re: Uzumebi -the songfic-
thanks.
now I think I might start trying to do either Sorisso or Replicare since I've found translation for the former and already did the later.
/writer's block really sucks DX

I know. But do your best, okay? Good luck!
Re: Uzumebi -the songfic-
That was awesome. These are the kind of stories that I think about when I'm depressed or angry or lonely. LOL
In fact, a lot of my original stories has something to do with Shikata's songs. Many many of them. But the one that started it all was VII. I might post the songfic that I created long ago. xD
I wonder if you could do "Kaze to Rashiban". Heheh.
